Can Your Dog Score a Hat Trick?

Hat Trick LogoMinnesota is not only known for having 10,000 lakes—it’s also the hockey capital of the Midwest. In keeping with this culture, the 2010 National Specialty Committee is sponsoring a challenge for our specialty exhibitors: show off your dog’s versatility, and see if your dog can score a hat trick!

To score a hat trick, a dog must earn three “goals” by placing or qualifying in three different events during the Specialty. The six possible events are Obedience, Rally, Agility, Puppy/Veteran Sweepstakes, Regular/Non-Regular Class Conformation, and Field.

Dogs who earn the Hat Trick Award will receive a special momento at the awards banquet and also win cash, as 50% of the total Hat Trick registration fees will be divided among the Hat Trick Awardees. All prizes will be presented at the banquet to each dog’s owner of record, if present; otherwise the awards will go to the handler of the dog in his most recent qualifying Hat Trick event.

Entering is easy and it’s only $10 to play, but dogs must be pre-registered. First complete your entry forms for the Specialty, then come online to fill in the Hat Trick Registration form. After submitting the registration form, you’ll be directed to the shopping cart to pay. Select “Hat Trick” and put it in your cart. We’ll take care of the rest, including a centrally located posting of our Hat Trick hopefuls and an updated goal tally.

Even if you’re more comfortable with a down-and-back than a backcheck, and more excited about Bully Sticks than hockey sticks, here’s your chance to let your dog shine at the Minnesota Specialty by going for a Hat Trick!

Qualifications for the Hat Trick Award

(any three, each from a different area of competition)

  • Obedience: Qualifying score in any regular or non-regular obedience class, excluding Team.
  • Rally: Qualifying score in any class.
  • Agility: Qualifying score in any Standard or JWW class (regular or preferred).
  • Puppy/Veteran Sweepstakes: Placement in any sweepstakes class.
  • Conformation: Best of Breed, Best of Opposite Sex, or a Judge’s Award of Merit in the Best of Breed competition. Placement in any regular or non-regular class, excluding the Breeder’s Class. (Please note: in Stud Dog and Brood Bitch classes, placements are awarded only to the parent dog, not to any of the representative offspring.)
  • Field: Qualifying score in any Specialty field test (BRT, WC, WCI, or WCX). “Bonus legs” are permitted; the pass need not be for a new title.

Example:  “Buddy” is entered in Novice Standard Agility, Novice JWW Agility, Open Dog in conformation, and the WC for field.  Buddy placed second in Novice Standard Agility and third in Novice JWW. In Open Dog, he takes fourth place, but since his first two “goals” were both in agility, he does not score a Hat Trick until field, when he passes the WC.
Example: “Noelle” is entered in Veterans Obedience, 7+ Year Bitch in Veteran Sweeps, Veteran Bitch 7-10 Years in Conformation, and the WC for field. She qualifies in obedience, is second in her Sweeps class, and goes first in her Veteran conformation class. She’s already earned a Hat Trick Award before she hits the field!
