It is the winning image in the Engineering photo competition at the University of Cambridge and was taken as part of a research project into the physics of flame extinction. Rob Gordon, Royal Society Newton International Fellow, was examining flame structures to prevent aircraft jet engines losing power due to flames suddenly going out. Other striking images in the collection include a nano grass field taken by Aruna Ivaturi and created from microscopic dye-sensitized solar cells capable of artificial photosynthesis.
